Fishing is accomplished by piloting your boat to any location on the map and clicking the hook icon above the boat.
In order to fish efficiently, it is smart to look for bubbles and ripples on the surface. Players can fish almost anywhere, and can use bait to spawn a random fish shadow, but some fish are only found in certain locations on each respective map.
Fishing Rods[]
Fishing rods can be bought at The Broken Rod Anglers Store. Some fish might be too strong for certain rods, and sturdier rods (such as the Fiberglass rod, Carbon rod or Monster Hunter rod) will be required to catch these fish. The Garbage Grabber rod is useful when searching the seas for trash.
Fishing Styles[]
There are several different fishing methods which will yield different results based on what one is fishing for.
Active fishing[]
The first type of fishing is active fishing. Active fishing is simply waiting for a fish or creature silhouette to appear while in fishing mode, casting the line in front of the fish and waiting for it to take the bait. The fish is hooked once the bobber disappears and appears "stuck" to your line. Tap once quickly when the fish is hooked or else it will get away! Fish will not always be hooked immediately, sometimes they will nibble at your line a few times before taking the bait. Patience and quick reflexes are important!
Cast and wait[]
The next type of fishing is to cast and wait. This method involves casting the line at any spot in the water, even if there is no fish or creature silhouette present. If a fish or creature is nearby, the bobber will bob one or several times, sending out ripples in the water, and your camera will slowly pan in towards the bobber. As with active fishing, the fish is hooked once the bobber disappears, and you need to tap once quickly to catch the fish. This method attracts many fish and creatures that may not show a silhouette.
Cast and reel[]
The third type of fishing is called "cast and reel". Cast and reel is performed by casting your line anywhere in the fishing circle and either reeling the line in all the way to the boat or slowly a little bit at a time. With this method, there is no fish or creature silhouette visible. Instead your line will automatically snag anything in its path and reel it in automatically. Alternatively, if you stop reeling, the bobber will begin to dip under the surface until whatever is on the other end is hooked. Same as with active fishing, you can tell something is hooked when the bobber stays under the surface and the ripples are larger. Trash and creatures are more commonly caught this way, since the reeling action causes the line to hook on things that might not normally move.
Bait fishing[]
With bait fishing, you throw bait into the water and wait until a fish silhouette appears, and then proceed with the Active Fishing technique. Depending on which bait is used, this will yield different results than fishing without bait. Using bait increases your chances of catching rare and epic fish.
Reeling Minigame[]
Along with any type of fishing, there is a reeling minigame that will occur if a player has hooked a rare fish, creature, or monster. Instead of the auto reeling that occurs normally, the player will be presented with a rapidly decaying bar along the bottom with a prompt to "REEL!" In order to reel, the player must hold their finger on their screen until the bar reaches the yellow "perfect" zone. Once the bar is in that zone, the player must tap or hold to maintain the bar in that position. If the player lets the indicator reach either end of the bar, their line will break and the fish will get away.
There are two difficulty levels: Medium (with a fixed "Perfect" zone) and Difficult (with a moving "Perfect" zone).
Fishing net[]
The fishing net is a single-use item and can be purchased from the Broken Rod Anglers Store for 1 . The net can be dropped in an area and it will catch approximately one fish on its own. Up to 5 fishing nets can be dropped in a destination. Fishing nets should be collected within 48 hours. If not collected, they are converted into "used fishing nets" and returned to the bag as trash items.
Lures[]
"Improving the lures increases the chances of catching a big fish, but does not guarantee success."
Lures are believed to increase the player's chances of catching larger specimens of a certain fish, creature or monsters. The progress made for each lure can checked through the inventory panel, and once a lure is level 1, it can be upgraded and equipped.
Note: when a lure for a particular species is equipped, it is not possible to catch more than a 1-star fish of any other species.
